- Step 1: Prepare & Sear: Finely dice the onion. Heat some oil in a large pan or pot. Add the minced meat and brown it until crumbly. Add the onion cubes and cook with the meat until translucent. Season everything generously with salt, pepper, and paprika powder. Taste and adjust seasoning!
- Step 2: Layer 1: The Meat Base: Take a sufficiently large casserole dish (approx. 25x35 cm or similar). Put the browned minced meat into the dish and spread it evenly on the bottom.
- Step 3: Layer 2: The Colorful Vegetables: While the meat is browning, you can already prepare the bell peppers, cucumber, tomatoes, and (if you're using them) the mushrooms. Wash the vegetables and cut everything into bite-sized pieces or slices. Generously spread the vegetable mixture over the meat layer in the casserole dish. It already looks great, right?
- Step 4: Layer 3: The Cream Sauce: Now comes the highlight! In a bowl, mix the Crème fraîche with the entire bottle of Texicana Salsa. Stir well until a homogeneous, creamy and spicy sauce is created. Carefully and evenly pour this sauce over the vegetable layer in the casserole dish.
- Step 5: Into the Oven: Preheat your oven to 190°C (upper/lower heat) (for convection, adjust accordingly, usually approx. 170-180°C). Place the casserole dish in the oven and cover it with a lid or aluminum foil for the first 30 minutes. This helps the vegetables cook nicely and become tender. Then, remove the lid/foil and let the casserole bake for another 15 minutes until the sauce is lightly bubbling and perhaps forms some small blisters.
- Your Super Delicious Mafia Pot is ready! Let it stand for a short while before serving.
Notes
This recipe is super versatile! For the meat, you can use mixed, turkey, or chicken mince, or make it vegetarian with soy granules or lentils. Feel free to add other vegetables like zucchini, corn, kidney beans, or broccoli. Adjust sauce spiciness with more chilies or temper with sour cream or Schmand. Add grated cheese like Cheddar, Gouda, or Emmentaler during the last 10-15 minutes for a golden, cheesy topping. Ensure vegetables are cut into bite-sized pieces but not too small. Season the meat well when browning. Use quality Crème fraîche and salsa you enjoy. You can prep the meat and chop vegetables the day before and store separately for easy assembly on the day of cooking. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 2-3 days. Reheat in the microwave or oven. It can also be frozen for 2-3 months; thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.
